Project Sunshine: A Special Project for the Children

In solidarity with all the relief efforts for the victims of Super Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan), Bright Start has embarked on a special project for one of the most vulnerable population whenever natural disasters strike --- the children. We want to make sure the children are given the special attention that they rightfully deserve. This will be in-line with our past projects wherein we supported public health centers, public day care centers, and SpED schools.

When children are exposed to circumstances that are beyond the usual scope of human experience (eg, a terrorist attack, natural disaster, or acts of violence), they may have difficulty understanding and coping with the events and may develop a range of symptoms, including trauma symptoms, depression, anxiety, or, if deaths are involved, bereavement.

The Plan

Since Typhoon Yolanda struck in many places, the Bright Start team will begin this special project in four specific barangays (village)/ areas namely: Barangay Canhabagat (Medellin, Cebu); Barangay Pandan, (City of Bogo, Cebu); Barangay Libertad (Daanbantayan, Cebu) and Barangay Sto. Rosario (Baybay, Leyte).

These places were chosen since it is in these areas where we have Bright Start volunteers who can facilitate our mission. That way, we will be able to update our sponsors on how and where donations were distributed.

Project Duration: 5 months (November 16, 2013 - April 15, 2014)

Phase 1
Short Term Goal: To conduct a nutrition drive in the barangays for 20 - 100 children.

Snack packs to include milk, biscuits, water, and vitamins.
Budget per pack: Php100.00 (~US$2.00)
Depending on the resources available, we may also give clothes, books, or toys.

Phase 2
Long Term Goal: To provide assistance (resources permitting) to the barangay to rebuild or refurnish their day care center or kinder classroom.

Classes in these areas have already been disrupted. Schools are partially or completely destroyed. We hope that as soon as possible, we can help rebuild the classrooms such that children can learn and play with their friends once again.

Our Appeal

Bright Start is then appealing to generous individuals who can help us help the children and be part of the Project Sunshine Team! In-kind donations needed are vitamins, books, toys, and school supplies for children. Monetary donations are most welcome. These will be used to buy food items for the nutrition drive, to facilitate our mission (e.g. fuel for transportation), and to purchase necessary construction materials.
